Destination Overview

Essential background & heritage of Mihintale (The Cradle of Buddhism)

Sacred mountain sanctuary with 1,840 granite steps where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 247 BC.

Mihintale is venerated as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. In 247 BC, Arahat Mahinda met King Devanampiya Tissa here and preached the Dhamma. A flight of 1,840 grand stone steps bordered by temple trees leads up to the summit stupas, meditation caves, an ancient hospital, and the sheer pinnacle of Aradhana Gala overlooking sweeping forest plains.
