Destination Overview

Essential background & heritage of Dunhinda Falls (The Smoky Cascade)

Thunderous 64-meter waterfall named for its perpetual vapor mist cloud crashing into an amphitheater pool.

Located 5km from Badulla town, Dunhinda Falls is created by the Badulu Oya river leaping over a 64-meter cliff into a secluded gorge. The force of the drop creates a perpetual cloud of smoky water droplets giving the falls its name (Dun meaning smoke/mist). The scenic 1km jungle footpath to the falls is lively with wild monkeys and vendors selling wild honey.
